J’accueille chaque proposition de mémoire qui s’inscrit dans l'une des grandes thématiques de mes recherches (cf. onglet Présentation) ou plus largement dans les domaines de linguistique de l’anglais (syntaxe, sémantique, morphologie, pragmatique) ou de linguistique contrastive (anglais-français et/ou anglais-néerlandais). De préférence, l'étudiant.e se penche sur un phénomène linguistique concret qui peut être étudié en détail à partir de données de corpus (p.ex. Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) ou un corpus parallel). Ce phénomène peut être une construction spécifique, une famille de constructions ou encore une différence grammaticale frappante entre l’anglais et une autre langue.

Liste de sujets possibles :

1. More challenging than you think this may be: A Construction Grammar treatment of Yodish grammar
2. A study of fake before simple nouns vs. more complex nominals, or why is a fake painting typically still a painting, but a fake Van Gogh painting not a Van Gogh painting? 
3. An exploration of what restricts the ambiguity in Adj N N, e.g. American football player: finding bracketing tendencies
4. A study of meta-linguistic expressions such as I’m just saying, ..., let me tell you, ..., I say to you, my friends, ..., I can tell you this: ..., I can’t say... , etc.: variety, functions and spread
5. Basically, this adverb is much more frequently used now than before: a corpus-based study comparing sentence-initial adverbs in contemporary English and earlier stages of English
6. A micro-study of the uses of honestly and seriously
7. New trends, new words: a corpus-based study of new words or phrases based on a template (X 2.0, Xphobia, Xgeddon, Xalypse, Xathon, Xmania, Xification, eco-X, neo-Xism, post-Xism, retro-X, premium X, smart X, X footprint, etc.) (Several students could work on this, each taking a subset; students may also look at the rise (and fall?) of overly trendy word formation patterns, such as X-licious)
8. A corpus-based analysis of the grammatical environments in which people use the fuck and similar swear or slang items
9. A comparison of few (or little) and a few (or a little), particularly in combination with only (in He only has a few friends left, it’s hard to drop the article a but in He has only a few friends left, dropping a is perfectly possible)
10. A study of less vs. fewer with countable nouns or countable reference: corpus-based analysis with special attention to register and genre
11. An investigation of irony in the TV corpus
12. A study of repetition in political speeches: form (respecting constituent boundaries or not?) and function (searching for words, emphasis?)
13. Any problem of English grammar or morphology suggested by the student, especially one for which existing reference grammars have not provided an adequate treatment
