Groundwater governance was the main theme of my PhD in Economics, defended in december 2002, and I continue working on this topic since then, particularly in Maghreb countries, through my involvement in the research program Groundwater Arena (2012-2016), and more recently, through the co-management of a working group on this topic with the French Development Agency (AFD), in partnership with Costea.

I started working on this concept in the mid-2000s because I felt the need to decipher the dominant international discourses in the field of water management and IWRM was an excellent candidate at that time. In particular, I focused my attention on the gap between the discourses and the practical implementation of IWRM, through the difficulties encountered on the ground in Burkina Faso (Petit & Baron, 2009). Subsequently, I became interested in how this notion could be mobilized to analyze water policies (Petit, 2009) and the difficulties encountered in identifying a battery of indicators for integrated water resource management (Petit, 2016). More recently, I have focused my attention on the instruments derived from this notion and their implementation in the French water policy (Petit, 2020).
