Projet émergent financé par la MESHS (2024-2025), IMAGIN_IRL

During the revolutionary period (1912-1923), Ireland very often hit the headlines of French newspapers, at a moment when news agencies started sending photographers to cover conflicts and wars for an audience always more eager for international news. IMAGIN_IRL has been set up to examine France’s reaction to the Irish revolution, and the role of photographs, cartoons and press coverage in the reimagining of Ireland by the French public in the interwar years. The project’s interdisciplinary team will mobilize the tools of digital humanities, history, history of art, and literature to examine the key role of internationalization in the struggle for Ireland’s freedom, and to analyse the role of iconography and its circulation in the political emancipation of Ireland. This initial study will also elaborate a research agenda to study underexamined sources to uncover and examine the legacies of Ireland’s revolution in France not only in the press, but also in fictional narratives, film, artistic and cultural representations.
