PhD project

Alcohol use disorder is characterized by evolutive trajectories involving numerous cycles of treatment, abstinence and relapse and by difficulties in care adherence. If several studies have demonstrated the role of emotional processes in relapse in alcohol use disorder, a little-explored process concerns the way in which life events and alcohol-related experiences are integrated in the individual’s identity. Autobiographical memory gathers memories about personal past experiences and facts about the self, and contributes to the identity’s lifespan formation and evolution. In fact, the sense of identity relies in part on the way autobiographical memories are integrated in a long term self-knowledge system, by giving meaning to memories for self-conception. The main aim of my thesis project is to identify the role of the sense of identity, investigated from autobiographical memories, in the clinical evolution of people suffering from alcohol use disorder.
