Research Themes

The guiding principle of my research is to characterize the molecular factors, both extra- and intracellular, that regulate ion channel proteins and their influence in human pathophysiology. In other words, how the molecular environment of an ion channel can impact its activity and thus affect cellular physiology and consequently the physiology of the animal organism, specifically renal and intestinal functions, thermosensation, nociception, angiogenesis, as well as pathological processes related to carcinogenesis.

Research Themes

  • Regulation of calcium homeostasis in renal, intestinal, and bone physiology

  • Signaling pathways regulating thermo sensation (cold) and nociception

  • Role of intracellular calcium and ion channels in cell migration and adhesion

  • Role of ion channels in the migration of epithelial and endothelial cells and their consequences on tumor invasion and angiogenesis

  • Identification of TRP channel profiles as dual molecular targets for vascularization and tumor progression in prostate cancers.

  • Rapid/non-transcriptional hormonal regulation and its consequences on the physiology of epithelial, nervous, and endothelial cells.

  • Role of ion channels in cellular plasticity, oxidative stress, and cellular metabolism during breast cancer progression and therapy resistance

  • Role of calcium signaling in endothelial cell plasticity

  • Functional profile of endothelial-mesenchymal transition: a new approach against tumor cell dissemination
